It's in a well-travelled exurban area adjacent to a state park, a Civil War battlefield and the Appalachian Trail. It is well known as a very picturesque, almost untouched 19th century farming village. I'm sure Burkittsville was a fine place to shoot the opening scenes of the movie. but it's still hard to go in circles on the Appalachian Trail. There are plenty of places in the central Appalachians where getting lost is perfectly plausible (though if you have the sense to follow a stream, you'll still reach a phone pretty quickly).

The Blair Witch Project's handling of location was like siting a movie in Central Park in NYC, with the protagonists getting lost in the Ramble for a week, unable to find their way out. I know this is nit-picking, but perhaps it's appropriate on a movie sub to suggest that if a film sets itself in an actual location, the film should be at least somewhat congruent with the site. It's a heavily populated exurban location about seven miles from Harper's Ferry.

South Mountain is a single ridge with a populated valley on either side and the Appalachian Trail running along the crest. The fact is, it's impossible to get lost on South Mountain outside of Burkittsville, which sits at the foot of Crampton's Gap, a reasonably well-known Civil War battlefield. Knowing the area, I was tickled by the premise of people getting lost in those scary woods outside of town. Some idiot even went so far as to do some digging in the local cemetery. Heather Donahue gives us the best Up-Nostril since José Ferrer in "Cyrano de Bergerac.I watched it out of curiosity after I saw news accounts of people who took the movie too seriously showing up in Burkittsville to hunt for relics. It is iconic, so I watched it.Utz chips and beer is indeed the meal of champions.Guide: F-bomb. Yes, I wanted to kick the crap out of Michael (Williams) too. The internal conflict the group has in the woods was over done and was more grating than entertaining. The interviews with locals seemed extremely real and not boring. This is the mother of the hand held genre with Heather Donahue being the cut off face that launched a 1,000 films. I feel like I am the last person on the planet to have seen this film and I could have left it off my bucket list. if you're looking for the movie that pretty well started the found footage genre, this is it.

At a point where horror movies and thirllers were just cliche after cliche, this just came outta nowhere. I don't really like this movie, but I gotta hand it to the creators for the unique style and idea. It's worth a rent or a buy, judge for yourself. I think the scariest part is how you don't see as much as you hear, because often the sound is 10 times worse than the thing making the sound. This movie isn't too scary, but if you watch it in the middle of the night with all your lights off and alone, it will successfully freak you out. And if this was happening to me, I doubt I'd pick up the video camera and tape it all instead of running like hell. Even I knew that they should've followed the stream out of the woods instead of going deeper into the forest. They did a very good job and I hope to see more works from them in the near future.Sure, some of the realism could've been better. The character development was well done, and you will often find yourself waiting for daylight along with the characters. Was this movie overhyped? A little, but I think if it wasn't that it wouldn't have been as successful, since the actors, writers and directors are relatively unknown. The acting in this movie by the three young kids was very good, especially if the rumors about how they improvised most of it were true. I did think it was good, with an excellent and very original plot. They are never found, but a year later their footage is discovered, and it seems to indicate that there really was a witch and it was stalking these three filmmakers.I did not find THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT especially scary, although it was rather spooky.

Then, when everyone found out it was fake, I heard all sorts of bad things about it.THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is about three young filmmakers, Heather Donahue, Michael Williams and Josh Leonard (actors with same names as their characters), go out into the woods of Burkittesville, Maryland to do a documentary on the mythical Blair Witch.

When people thought it might be real, they loved it. First, I heard this movie was the scariest movie since THE EXORCIST, then I heard it was the worst movie of the year. I've never seen the tide turn on movie reviews before like I did in THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.
